Dr. Faizah Visram, C.Psych.
Dr. Visram provides psychological services for pre-schoolers, children, adolescents, and families. Dr. Visram also provides services for adults with intellectual disability.
Dr. Visram views assessment as a collaborative process that helps individuals better understand themselves, and helps parents better understand their children’s strengths and challenges. For children with suspected language-related disabilities and social communication challenges, Dr. Visram will collaborate with a registered speech-language pathologist. Assessment services are also provided for the following types of challenges:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ages 18 months +)
- Learning problems including Dyslexia
- Developmental Delay/Intellectual Disability (including for Developmental Services applications)
- ADHD
- Gifted ability
- Mood and Anxiety
Dr. Visram works with parents and children when behaviour problems related to ADHD, anxiety, depression, and emotional regulation, are impacting the family system. Her therapy approach is strengths based and solution focused. Dr. Visram also works with individuals and families requiring help with challenges in the following areas:
- Anxiety (social anxiety, selective mutism, generalized anxiety, separation anxiety, phobia)
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- Pain management
- Adjustment to chronic illness
- Fear of medical procedures & needle phobia
- Health Anxiety
- Tic disorders/Tourette’s Syndrome (Dr. Visram is certified in Cognitive Behavioural Intervention for
Tics – CBIT) - Trichotillomania (hair pulling)
The above therapy services are also provided for individuals with autism spectrum disorder, or intellectual disability. When working with individuals with a developmental disability Dr. Visram draws on her work and training experiences in a variety of settings including the Alvin Buckwold Child Development Program in Saskatoon and her current work with Partners in Parenting.
In working with clients, Dr. Visram utilizes her knowledge of interventions based on family systems theory, cognitive-behavioural therapy, applied behaviour modification, interpersonal therapy, narrative therapy, and the SPACE treatment program (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions).
Dr. Visram provides family therapy to families seeking change in family dynamics and relational patterns. Dr. Visram received training in family therapy through her practicum placement in the Internship Program in Family Therapy, Saskatoon Health Region, when she was a doctoral student at the University of Saskatchewan, as well as through her pre-doctoral internship at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in 2007 where she focused also on working with children with dual-diagnoses and children with medical conditions.
Dr. Visram was the first registered health care provider to offer Equine Assisted Psychological Therapy in the Ottawa region. Although Dr. Visram is not currently offering this service, she would be pleased to consult with Psychologists interested in practicing in this field.
